Right Here, Right Now
Dear beer lover,
Terroir and the sense of place is often overlooked in beer, despite being a cornerstone of wine, spirits and even most cocktails. But beer can be every bit as indicative of a place or moment in time, despite its often international ingredients list.
Unlike the wine world, this sense of place is not always about the locality of the ingredients to the final product. Beer lets us experiment with produce, processes and flavours in a different way, allowing the brewer to create something entirely new, or, as is the case with many classic styles, to help define the place that gave birth to the beer itself. This month we explore beers that take inspiration from their surroundings, and in turn have helped characterise those very places. Beer cannot be seen as distinct from the culture that created it, or the people who drink it.
